DEAD LINKS: two worlds
For the exhibition “ZIEN IS GELOVEN” ( Seeing is believing ) eight young media artist were asked to make a work concerning the summer school theme: Pioneering, Experiment & Experience in Art organized by the Mozes and Aäron Church in Amsterdam. I made a media work that focussed on the meaning of human symbols and the relation between these symbols in religions and cyberspace.
People are symbol-making and symbol-exchanging animals. It’s therefor no miracle that religions exist and are followed by many people. We as humans like to create worlds with our made symbols and in these worlds the symbols have a important meaning and value. By sharing information and making connections a new world is created by man, known as Cyberspace. These two worlds, the old world (religion) and the new world (cyberspace) are brought together in my work with the use of a dead link. This is because in these two created worlds the link is the essence. Internet consists of connecting to pages, other people, new information etc. In the church it’s a connection to communicate with God and to exchange symbolic information.
With this work I let the visitor research and explore the meaning of these two worlds that are created by man. What happens in these two areas, what is the structure, how do we experience and relate to it? Are we aware?
The DEAD LINS: two worlds work exists of an IPad connected to the internet on an authentic table. The red carpet integrates the work with the holy altar. On the website that was created for this work, are six holograms of dead links I found on the internet which I gave a symbolic funeral by projecting them as a ghost hologram somewhere in the church. The visitors could use the Ipad to explore the website and also find dead links on other websites with a dead link app. If people found a dead link they could write a post and get in contact with me so that I could arrange a symbolic funeral for the persons dead link.

I also made the poster and flyer designs for the exhibition. The text “ZIEN IS GELOVEN” is placed on a grid of leaves that moves before your eye creating an optical illusion. Seeing is believing.
